Career Summary:
In a short two-year career at Celina High School, the late Greg Craig put up some great numbers as a returner, receiver, and running back while playing football from 1974-1975. He also helped lead the Bulldogs to a 10-1 record and a Lions Bowl victory his senior season.
Though complete statistics are not available, with two games left to play in his final season, Craig had caught 23 passes for 521 yards and six touchdowns, returned 13 punts for 430 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed 61 times for 601 yards and four touchdowns. He posted 169 yards rushing and 93 yards receiving in the Lions Bowl win over David Lipscomb, including a 94-yard touchdown run to clinch the victory—which is considered one of the greatest wins in school history.
Craig was the Tri-Lakes Conference Co-Player of the Year and named First Team All-Midstate by the Nashville Tennessean and Banner in 1974. Craig also started for the Celina High School basketball team that winter.
Nominator Comment:
“Greg Craig had the uncanny ability to get away from tacklers. He was very difficult to tackle in the open field and, whenever he got in front of the pursuit, he was gone. No one ever caught him from behind. And if he could touch the ball, he could catch it. He was one of the best athletes to ever don the black and gold, which makes him deserving of induction into the Clay County Sports Hall of Fame.”
